Puppy Dog Essentials
A new puppy owner is going to need a few things to start off with and it is better to get these items before you bring the new pet home.
Travel crate - for training or not. Most shelters and breeders are adamant that you must have one before you take your newest addition home. It is for the safety of the pet, gives them security and introduces the pet to its own space.
Bowls - 1 for water, 1 for food. Remember, the smaller the puppy, the smaller the bowl. But you might have to get bigger bowls as your puppy grows.
Leash - A 6 foot nylon lead is great for puppy training. There are many different sizes available, be sure to get the right size for your puppy.
Collars - Get an adjustable buckled collar that will fit properly at first, but can eventually become enlarged as your dog grows. An average dog goes through several collars during the growing stages, so be prepared.
Food - Ask your vet, shelter staff, and the breeder or read the labels carefully when getting dog food. Puppies deserve a high quality food so that they get the best start during their early years. It gives their health a good foundation for life.
Veterinarian – Get appointments lined up to check your puppy for worms or other health problems – this is a good time to get vaccinations.
Training – Read some books on dog obedience or send your pup to Doggy Kindergarten if you need that extra help.
Dog Toys - Those squeaky rubber ones are every puppies favorite.
Bitter Apple Spray - This keeps your new puppy from tearing up your shoes and furniture. Makes a great training addition.
Puppy Treats – Great for that added training incentive and there are a lot of different types that give your dog that varying appetizer. Plus – treats can be healthy for your puppy because that help their teeth and bones. |
